PRONONC. ET ORTH. — GUÉRIN 1892 donne ataghan (vedette de renvoi) ainsi que yataghan comme des var. de yatagan : ia-ta-gan; noté aussi atagan ds HUGO, Les Chansons des rues et des bois, 1865, p. 10.
ÉTYMOL. ET HIST. — 1787 yatagan (DE PEYSONNEL, Commerce de la mer Noire, II, 60 ds LITTRÉ : Les armes blanches, sabres grands couteaux appelés yatagans, et couteaux ordinaires que l'on fabrique à Rizé sont très-renommés); 1829 ataghan (V. HUGO, Orient. 22, Devic ds LITTRÉ Suppl.).
Empr. au turc oriental yataghan « sorte de poignard » (Devic ds LITTRÉ Suppl.).
